Best stages to sleep on the Coastal Camino

Where you break each day decides how hard the Coastal Camino feels. These are the overnight stops most pilgrims build their itinerary around, in route order, with the stage distance into each and why it works. Compare the albergues at any stop, or book a bed in a click.

  1. A Guarda

Stage into A Guarda: 2 km

Sleep here on your first Spanish night so the Minho crossing is unhurried — cross in the afternoon and settle in. Skip only if you crossed early and feel strong.

  2. Oia

    Stage into Oia: 14.3 km

A short half-day from A Guarda — the gentle way to split the coast into easy days, ideal if you want a scenic, low-mileage stop. Beds are few, so reserve.

  3. Baiona

    Stage into Baiona: 18.2 km

The classic second overnight — a hillier day from Oia ends at a handsome seaside town with food and atmosphere. A natural place to break before the long Vigo day.

  4. Vigo

    Stage into Vigo: 26.9 km

After the long, flat day around the bay, the city is the obvious overnight — most beds on the route and full services. Good place to take stock before the hills.

  5. Redondela

    Stage into Redondela: 16.6 km

A short day from Vigo and the junction with the Central route — a sensible overnight that sets up a clean run to Pontevedra. Busy, so have a booking backup.

  6. Pontevedra

    Stage into Pontevedra: 19.6 km

The best rest-day overnight on the whole route — a car-free old town, plenty of beds and every service. Stop two nights here if you need a day off your feet.

  7. Padrón

    Stage into Padrón: 18.9 km

The standard last overnight before Santiago — sleep here to keep the final day to a relaxed ~24 km and reach the cathedral in time for the Pilgrim’s Mass.

Keep planning

Frequently asked questions

How many days is the Portuguese Coastal Camino from the border?
Most pilgrims take about 6–7 days from the Minho crossing to Santiago, sleeping in A Guarda, Baiona, Vigo, Redondela or Pontevedra and Padrón. Adding Oia turns the first part into gentler, shorter days.
Which is the best overnight stop on the coastal route?
Pontevedra is the best for a rest day (car-free old town, many beds), Vigo has the most beds, and Baiona is the most scenic mid-route. Padrón is the standard last stop before Santiago.
What is the shortest way to split the coast into easy days?
Add Oia as a short half-day after A Guarda, then Baiona, Vigo, Redondela, Pontevedra and Padrón. That keeps most days under 20 km, at the cost of one extra night and booking ahead for Oia’s few beds.
