Where to Stay in Caminha

Caminha sits at the Portuguese end of the Minho river crossing — the last stage before pilgrims on the Coastal Route enter Galicia. Whether you need a €12 bunk in a municipal albergue or a €89 boutique hotel with a rooftop wine bar, you'll find it here. Three distinct categories below, from most pilgrim-focused to most comfortable.

Why You Must Book Ahead in Peak Season (May–October)

The Camino de Santiago Coastal Route reaches peak traffic between May and October. During this window, Caminha is the last Portuguese town before the Minho crossing — every pilgrim on the Coastal Way passes through it. The municipal albergue's 28 beds are first-come, first-served and routinely full by 14:30 in July and August. Private guesthouses often sell out days in advance during Semana Santa (Holy Week) and the main summer months.

Practical rule: If you're arriving between June and September, book your guesthouse or hotel at least 5–7 days ahead. For the albergue, plan to arrive at the dock before the 13:00 ferry if possible — the hospitalero opens at 14:00 and beds are allocated immediately.

Albergues — Pilgrim Hostels

Official pilgrim hostels (albergues) are the backbone of the Camino de Santiago experience. They operate on a pilgrim-credential system, keep prices at €10–€15, and create the nightly camaraderie that defines the walk. Caminha's municipal albergue sits minutes from the ferry dock.
