Pontevedra

Pontevedra is the most rewarding city to rest in on the whole Portuguese Camino — a graceful Galician capital whose car-free old town of granite squares, arcades and tapas bars is regularly named one of the best places to walk in Spain. It is also a spiritual landmark: the scallop-shaped church of the Virxe Peregrina, the Pilgrim Virgin, is patron of the route, and the Spiritual Variant branches off just beyond the city.

Do you need to book in Pontevedra?

For the 56-bed municipal, usually not. For the old-town hostels and rooms — the nicer option — book ahead.

⏰ What time beds usually fill

The municipal holds beds into the evening; the small private places sell out earlier.

⚠️ Biggest mistake in Pontevedra

Not booking a room when you want a rest day — the pedestrian old town fills on weekends.

Quiet vs social — what to expect

The municipal is sociable; tiny Slow City Hostel and old-town rooms are far quieter.

Where pilgrims stay

Pontevedra's public albergue, run by the Xunta, is a modern building with 56 beds (expandable to 86 in high season) at €10, open all year except roughly 24 December to 7 January, and assigned first-come with no reservations. As a full city there is far more choice: small, well-rated private hostels such as Slow City Hostel in the old town (6 beds, about €20–23, bookable) and a range of hotels mean you can always find a bed — and the car-free centre is the place to be.

A city built for walking

Few places suit a pilgrim's rest day better. Pontevedra pedestrianised almost its entire historic core, so you wander car-free between the round Pilgrim Virgin church, the Gothic Basílica de Santa María, Praza da Leña and the market without a single road to cross. It is a place to eat well, replace gear, see a pharmacy or doctor, and let your feet recover before the final push to Santiago.

Continuing — and the Spiritual Variant

Beyond Pontevedra the main Camino heads for Caldas de Reis, about 21 km on through pine and eucalyptus and the Barosa waterfalls. Just outside the city the Spiritual Variant (Variante Espiritual) branches west via Armenteira and a boat trip up the Ría de Arousa — a longer, scenic detour that rejoins near Padrón. Decide before you leave Pontevedra which line you will follow.

Where to stay in Pontevedra

Pontevedra is a real rest-day city with one of the finest car-free old towns in Spain, so accommodation is plentiful — from the public albergue to small hostels and hotels among the granite squares. The public albergue is cheapest but does not take bookings; the old town is where most pilgrims want to be.
