Redondela

Redondela is the meeting point of the two Portuguese Caminos: here the Coastal Route you have followed from the border finally rejoins the Central Camino coming up from Tui and Porto. A lively town beneath two towering railway viaducts at the head of its ría, it is a natural overnight before the climb toward Pontevedra.

Casa da Torre (municipal) is social and central; A Conserveira is larger and a touch calmer.

Where pilgrims stay

Redondela's landmark pilgrim address is the public Casa da Torre, a restored 16th-century tower house on the main square run by the Xunta: 36 beds at €10, open all year, first-come with no reservations. Because the town sits at the junction of two routes it can be busy, so for a guaranteed bed the central private Albergue A Conserveira (40 beds, about €15–16, open March–October, bookable) is a dependable backup, alongside the town's small hotels.

A town of two Caminos

Redondela is best known for the two great railway viaducts that stride over its rooftops and for the Coca, a dragon paraded through the streets at the Corpus Christi festival. For pilgrims its significance is practical: this is where coastal and central walkers merge into a single, busier corridor for the final days to Santiago, so the waymarking, services and pilgrim crowd all change character here.

Continuing to Pontevedra

From Redondela the combined Camino climbs out of town and on toward Arcade — famous for its oysters — and the medieval Ponte Sampaio before reaching Pontevedra, about 20 km on. It is a moderate day with a couple of climbs early; stock up in Redondela, as the first stretch has limited services.

Where to stay in Redondela

Redondela is the junction town where the Coastal Camino rejoins the Central Portuguese route, so it sees plenty of pilgrims and has both a public and several private albergues. The public Casa da Torre is central but does not take bookings; if you want a guaranteed bed or arrive late, the private albergues and the town's small hotels are the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Where can pilgrims stay in Redondela?
The main option is the public Casa da Torre albergue on the main square (36 beds, €10, open all year, first-come — no reservations). For a guaranteed bed, the central private Albergue A Conserveira (40 beds, about €15–16, open March–October) takes bookings, and the town also has small hotels.
Why is Redondela important on the Camino?
It is the junction where the Portuguese Coastal Camino rejoins the Central route. Pilgrims who walked the coast from Caminha or Vigo merge here with those coming up from Tui and Porto, sharing a single corridor for the last days into Santiago.
Does the Casa da Torre albergue take reservations?
No. The Xunta-run Casa da Torre assigns its 36 beds first-come from the early afternoon. In busy months arrive early or use the bookable private Albergue A Conserveira as a backup.
