Luggage transfer on the Coastal Camino

You do not have to carry your full pack. For a few euros a day, a van moves your bag door-to-door to your next accommodation, so you walk with a light daypack. Here is exactly how it works on the Coastal route, what it costs, and the one rule that trips people up.

How it works, step by step

The night before, you leave your labelled backpack at your accommodation's reception before the morning cut-off (usually 08:00). A courier van collects it and delivers it to your next booked accommodation, normally by early-to-mid afternoon, before you arrive on foot. You walk the whole stage carrying only a small daypack with water, snacks and a rain layer.

What it costs

💡 Expect roughly €5–8 per bag per stage on the Portuguese Camino. Multi-stage packages are cheaper per day: a full Porto–Santiago block on the Coastal route runs around €85–100 for the whole trip. You pay per bag, not per person, so a couple sharing one large bag pays once.

The rule that trips people up

⚠️ Luggage transfer only works accommodation-to-accommodation, and municipal (public) albergues generally do NOT accept bag delivery. To use a transfer service you must book private albergues, guesthouses or hotels every night. If you plan to sleep in cheap municipal albergues, you carry your own pack. Decide this before you book beds.

Who runs it on the Portuguese route

Established operators covering the Camino Portugués include Correos (the Spanish post office 'El Camino con Correos'), Pilbeo, Tuitrans and Caminofácil. Most let you book the whole route online in advance or stage-by-stage; you attach a label and leave payment as instructed. Booking a day or two ahead is enough outside peak summer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Book the service

Reserve online for the whole route, or arrange stage-by-stage the evening before. You will get labels or a booking reference.

  2. 2

    Label your bag

Write your name and the exact name and address of your next accommodation on the tag. Attach any payment envelope as instructed.

  3. 3

Drop it at reception before 08:00

Leave the bag at your accommodation's agreed pick-up point before the morning cut-off. Keep valuables, water and documents in your daypack.

  4. 4

Walk light and collect on arrival

Walk the stage with only a daypack. Your bag will be waiting at your next accommodation's reception, usually by mid-afternoon.
